What does a dog think about living and dying?

Some encounters leave imprints on the soul – both as a communicator and as a human being.

Today I had one of those conversations that stays with you forever. I met a dog owner who had lost her two beloved dogs within just four months. They were her family, her children, her daily life. And now she was left with unbearable silence and a thousand unanswered questions.

She asked me to communicate with her dogs on the other side telepathically. Not because she doubted her love – but because she doubted whether she had done enough. A question I hear repeatedly.

And one that is almost always met with the same gentle message from the animals:
“Yes. You did more than enough.”

🌿 When an owner gives everything

This owner was one of those people you immediately sense. A dog mom with a heart that had done everything right. She had taken all the advice I usually give deeply to heart:

  • Mentally preparing her dogs by telling them what was going to happen
  • Explaining why difficult decisions were necessary
  • Sharing how long a situation would last
  • Talking to them as the living, feeling souls, they are

And I could feel it in the dogs’ energy. They were calm, safe, and full of gratitude. But one of the dogs shared a message so profound that it made me go quiet inside for a moment.

🐾 The dog said:

“It’s funny how you humans care so much about whether we live a long and happy life.
You focus a lot on how old we become.

For me, that is not important. What matters is the quality of the life I had. And that quality was high.

The years with my dog mom had so much depth and love that the energy could have stretched across 100 years.

And my soul lives on forever.

See you on the other side, Mom.”

When I shared this with her, she broke down – not only in grief but in relief. Animals do not see life as a timeline. They experience it as an energetic journey filled with love, safety, connection, and meaning.

And if they have had that, they have had everything.

💛 What can we learn from the animals’ perspective?

Animals teach us something incredibly beautiful about life and death:

1. It’s not about how long – but how deeply

Humans fear death and measure life in years.
Animals measure in moments.

2. They know when it’s time

Even when we face difficult decisions like euthanasia, I see again and again that animals have already accepted it and often guide their owners through it.

3. They forgive everything – except not being loved

The only thing an animal doesn’t understand is the absence of love. But when love is there, everything else is secondary.

4. They stay connected – just in a different way

The soul does not die.
The bond does not disappear.
It only changes form.

🌟 Helpful tips if you are grieving an animal

These suggestions have brought comfort to many of my clients:

Talk to them – even after they’ve passed

They hear you. The connection doesn’t end.

Write them a letter

It brings clarity and peace to the heart.

Create a small ritual

A candle. A stone. A place in the garden.
Something that marks their continued presence.

Allow your grief to exist

Grief is love with nowhere to go. Give it space.

Consider learning to communicate with animals yourself

It can be profoundly healing to feel your animal’s presence – even after their transition.

💬 Final thoughts

The dog was right. We, humans, care so much about time. But love isn’t measured in years. It’s measured in depth. In presence. In the energy shared between two souls.

And that energy never dies.

If you’re reading this because you’ve lost — or fear losing — an animal, know that your animals love you unconditionally. And they always carry your love with them.

So this dog didn’t care about linear time, but about the quality of what life contained while it was on Earth — and I think that’s a massive inspiration for all of us to reflect on.
